“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” ~ Isaiah 43:2
I was meditating on this word (this promise) and the one thing that really stood out to me were the words “When” and “Through”. I know this scripture well. I’ve seen it, read it a hundred times and in the past have thought, Ok. God is there for me. But not until now did I really see anything more than that. Now, when I read this word, I’m seeing and understanding that it isn’t just about God being there for me, but it is about Him being there “When”.
It confirms that there is no promise that I will avoid suffering. It confirms, that there is no promise that there will not be some real ugly that comes my way. There is not even a promise as to how little, how much or how often the struggles will be. But there is a promise that when the “When” happens, not only will I might have to go through it, but that He will be there making sure that it won’t consume me. Whether it be water, rivers or fire, whether it be relationships or circumstances, not matter what it is, God promises me that it will not destroy me.
It may feel like I’m not going to make it, it may feel like it’s impossible to get out of, it may feel like it will never end, but I thank God that His promise is not based on my feelings because I did make it. It was not impossible. Things got easier and the difficult seasons always came to an end. And as long as I remind myself that God has kept his promise before, I can walk in faith that He will keep it again. They say, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, but I believe it’s actually what God uses to increase our faith.
